RIVER & DOCKS . Pill boasted a thriving community on the banks of the Usk long before the lines of terraced street which most of us rememberer criss crossed from the river to the Mendlegief levels. Each dock had its own cottages where people lived and worked. Boat ferries ran a regul;ar service taking children from the Pier Head to the north dock , for school. Stories abound of german bombs hurling giant plumes of water into the air ,as the ferry was caught in the middle of an air raid. here we begin to look at this fascinating aspect in the lives of the docklander.
